The horrific shooting at the Harvest Music Festival in Las Vegas that left more than 50 dead and more than 400 injured has become the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history.

The previous deadliest shooting had occurred at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida, just last year. The June 2016 shooting left 49 dead and 58 injured.

Since 1949, no mass shooting had surpassed the previous highest death toll in less than seven years.

The deadliest mass shootings before Pulse had been:

32 killed and 23 injured at Virginia Tech in April 2007.

23 killed and 27 injured at Luby’s Cafeteria in Killeen, Texas, in October 1991.

21 killed and 19 injured at a McDonald’s in San Ysidro, California, in 1984.

16 killed and 31 injured at the University of Texas in Austin, Texas, in 1966.

13 killed in the streets of Camden, New Jersey, in 1949.

Before Sunday, the “deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history” belonged to a specific shooting for 17 years, 18 years, 7 years, 16 years, and 9 years.

This means it took usually a decade or more for the United States to have a new deadliest mass shooting. It only took 15½ months for the Pulse shooting to be replaced.
